No Buy Lent 2026

This year for Lent, I am going to refrain from buying any yarn and use up what I have. There’s more than enough in my yarn closet. I’m going to try everything, use different color combinations, or make the same pattern in several colors. Before I made the decision, I bought some yarn on sale that I’d been wanting to try. I was intentional with the colors that I purchased because I chose a couple of colors that I thought would complement each other when I combined leftovers of the remaining skeins. I was able to make a set out of two similar leftover yarns.

After some yarn was caught up in customs for an exorbitant amount of time, I thought, “Do I need it?” No. Will I use it… of course! So I thought that I would just use what I have – whole skeins, partial skeins, leftover bits and bobs, and see what pools off my hook. My stash has been whittled down to what I like. I want to use up more and make space. This will help me be more intentional about purchases in the future. The idea is to just use what I have during Lent. I’ll probably make another eight sets or so during Lent, which should put a good dent into my stash. This year, what I have worked on so far has been a variety of colors, but I can use up the remaining yarn from projects and put them to creative use either by combining them with other colors or a standard neutral.

This will be a good time to scroll less and create more.  I’ve made an effort to put my phone in another room in the evenings so I can just do something else. If I’m watching television and start scrolling, that’s all I do, because if I start scrolling, I’m not crocheting. Putting my phone away has been very effective. Additionally, I bought another battery-operated alarm clock. Then I’m not checking the phone and set it away from my bed at night.

My goals for the year haven’t changed. I’m committed to making 85 sets and some other projects for myself. I am looking forward to this Lenten period, contemplating the purchases I make, being intentional about what I use, and using up more of what I have. Here are photos of the sets I created using the yarns I bought specifically to combine. Then I used the partial skeins together.
